Jake Gray - The Retro Perspective
Jake Gray founded the media website The Retro Perspective, covering video games with a slant of 90s nostalgia. First launching with a YouTube channel in 2015, Jake combined his expertise as a composer and inspiration from the likes of Jim (Stephanie) Sterling, Red Letter Media and The Angry Video Game Nerd to create a unique vibe. Continually refining the vision and art style as the years went by.
Firstly, using the platform to draw attention to the amazing work being done in the games industry, Gray has interviewed high-profile composers such as Jamie Dunlap (South Park) and Mikko Tarmia (Amnesia) and also discussed titles such as Tomb Raider and Edge of Eternity with developers in various areas of video game production.
The Retro Perspective were also one of the first channels to make in-depth, long-form critiques on video games. A niche which has now become extremely prevalent on YouTube. One of TRP's first video projects was a 2 hour review of Metal Gear Solid 4 followed by a retrospective on the drastic changes to the Resident Evil series over entries 4, 5 and 6.
These videos were part of a process of self-teaching video production, a DIY approach that Gray applies to most of his creative output. The majority of editing, music and artwork for the channel is done by Gray and a book is now being worked on recounting the initial process, tying into the Metal Gear Solid 4 critique that started it all.
Gray is of course an avid video game collector. Mainly focusing on PS1 and PS2. There’s a more recent playlist gaining popularity on the channel looking back at issues of the Official Playstation 1 Magazine & its demo discs, aiming to cover the full set of 108 issues + specials!
In addition to the Retro Perspective, Gray is the leading member of Moonfleet Chamber Ensemble. A neo-classical/post-rock project that aims to tell politically driven stories through music and visuals. Their live show has been described as emotionally moving and unique, with a custom light show and projection, composed and programmed once again by Gray.
The Retro Perspective YouTube channel has amassed well over 250,000 views and continues to grow.
